A customer finds your hamper in a Reel. She comments "price?" and gets a reply asking her to WhatsApp you. She means to. She doesn't.
Instagram and WhatsApp are not rivals for your sales. They do different jobs. Instagram is where people find you and ask their first question. WhatsApp is where they come back: order updates, reorders, reminders, and the dealer groups a lot of Indian B2B trade runs on. The expensive mistake is treating Instagram as a waiting room for WhatsApp.
The short answer
- Use Instagram to be found and to answer the first question, inside the DM where it was asked.
- Use WhatsApp for the relationship after the first order: updates, payment links, reorders, and reminders.
- Never make a customer switch apps to get a price.
What each channel lets you do
Most of the difference comes from Meta's rules, not from the apps themselves. These decide who can start a chat and when you're allowed to reply.
| How customers find you | Reels, posts, Explore, hashtags, and ads | They need your number, a link, a QR code, or an ad |
|---|---|---|
| Who can start the chat | Only the customer: a DM, a story reply, or a comment | The customer, or you: from a personal number, or with an approved template on the Business API |
| Reply window | 24 hours after the customer's last message | 24 hours for normal replies on the Business API; no window on a personal number |
| Comments | Public, and you can send one private reply within 7 days | None |
| Messaging past customers | Not possible unless they write to you again | Templates to customers who opted in, or broadcast lists of up to 256 people who saved your number |
| Meta's fee | No per-message fee for replying to DMs | Per delivered template on the Business API; none on a personal number |
| Groups | Followers see posts, but buyers don't share a chat | Groups and communities, like dealer groups and parent groups |
Where Instagram wins
Discovery. Nobody finds a new saree shop by scrolling WhatsApp. They find it in a Reel, a friend's story, or Explore. If your product is visual (fashion, jewellery, gifting, home decor, food), Instagram is where demand starts.
Your grid is your catalog. Customers point at a post and ask about it. That only works if the reply knows which post they mean. In Querygen you can import your posts and Reels as catalog items, add the price and product code, and let replies answer about the exact item.
Comments are public proof. Twenty "price?" comments under a Reel tell the next viewer that other people want it. Replying publicly and then in a DM keeps that proof and still gets the buyer an answer.
Where WhatsApp wins
Coming back. Instagram doesn't let you message a past customer who hasn't written recently. WhatsApp does, with permission: an approved template on the Business API, or a message from a number they've saved. That's how Diwali reorders, restock alerts, and payment reminders happen.
Paperwork. Quotes, invoices, delivery photos, PDFs, and payment links feel natural on WhatsApp. Customers keep them there.
B2B and communities. Distributors run on dealer groups. Schools and clinics run on parent and patient groups. Nothing on Instagram replaces that.
The mistake that costs the most
"DM us on WhatsApp for price" feels harmless. In practice the customer has to open another app, find your number, and explain again which product they meant, because the Reel they were looking at didn't come with them. Some do it. Many don't.
The Wrapping Store used to redirect every Instagram DM to WhatsApp and lost buyers at the switch. It gets over 200 Instagram enquiries a month, and about 40% start from Reels and posts. Now those questions are answered inside the DM, and the team steps in for custom orders.
How to sell on both without doubling the work
- Answer on the channel where the customer asked. Querygen's Autopilot replies on Instagram and WhatsApp from the same catalog and FAQs, so you set up the answers once.
- Keep one workspace. Both channels land in the same inbox and the same sales board, so a lead from a Reel and a lead from a dealer group are tracked the same way.
- Let Instagram be the catalog for both. When a customer pastes a Reel link into WhatsApp, Querygen can match it to the imported item instead of asking "which one?"
- Offer WhatsApp when it helps the customer. After the order, ask "Can I send your delivery updates on WhatsApp?" That's a reason to share a number, not a hoop to jump through.
- Follow up within each channel's rules. On Instagram, follow-ups have to go out inside the 24-hour window. On WhatsApp, you can come back later with an approved template. See how to automate follow-ups.
Which channel leads, by business
| Business | Found on | Closed on | Kept in touch on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fashion, jewellery, gifting | Instagram Reels and posts | Instagram DM | WhatsApp: order updates and new drops |
| Real estate | Instagram and Click-to-WhatsApp ads | WhatsApp: brochures and site visits | |
| Coaching institute | Instagram content | Instagram DM or WhatsApp | WhatsApp: batch and fee reminders |
| Distributor or wholesaler | WhatsApp dealer groups and referrals | ||
| Bakery or caterer | Instagram DM or WhatsApp | WhatsApp: occasion reminders |

Frequently asked questions
Is Instagram or WhatsApp better for selling in India?
They do different jobs. Instagram is better for being discovered and answering the first question, because customers find you through Reels and posts. WhatsApp is better for repeat orders, order updates, reminders, and dealer or community groups. Most businesses that sell visual products do best using both.
Can I message my Instagram followers first?
No. Instagram only lets a business message people who have written to it first, replied to a story, or commented on a post. For a comment, you can send one private reply within seven days. After a customer messages you, you have 24 hours to reply.
Should I ask Instagram customers to message me on WhatsApp instead?
Not for the first question. Asking someone to switch apps loses the post they asked about and adds a step where buyers drop off. Answer inside Instagram, and offer WhatsApp later for things that help the customer, like order updates and payment links.
Can one tool handle both Instagram and WhatsApp?
Yes. Querygen connects Instagram professional accounts and WhatsApp numbers to one workspace, with one inbox, one sales board, and one knowledge base. The same AI agent can answer on both channels, and imported Instagram posts are recognised when a customer pastes the link into WhatsApp.
Does Meta charge for Instagram DMs?
Meta doesn't charge a per-message fee for replying to Instagram DMs. On the WhatsApp Business API, Meta charges for each delivered template message, while normal replies inside the 24-hour window are free.
